The Life Cycle of a Movement can be defined by distinct phases.

1. The Grand Vision

A dominant personality or coaches propose a new and transcendent idea that promises a cure for disconnected individuals.

So here we are. Plans are in motion to confront the system in Australia. The gunships are circling. Signs of trouble appear from the out-houses. An isolated player, vulnerable, shivering, the slogan POSITIVE INTENT displayed prominently as a symbol, has stumbled into view and is removed under a blanket towards an inconclusive loan stint elsewhere.

Do you ever miss the start, when optimism reigned? The era of early Bazball, of Bazball without brains.

2. Love-Bombing

Movement founders promise a fresh beginning, hope for a future, support, salvation together united in belief in the big idea.

What did it represent back then? A team united feeling good. Ink. Muscles. Jawlines. Elite male wellness energy. Of course, The team often say it’s not a real term, which is funny since it’s not recognized, what was that spectacle?

But we know what it is. It’s the batsman attempting a move so unconventional it has to be pixelated. It’s the excitement of Ben Stokes in his final form, a look that says: focused titan, strong features, untamed style, truly contemporary you half-expect to look down and see him playing on the ground shirtless and cradling a wild salmon.

It’s the opener often seen addressing the media, resembling a joyful figure smartly dressed, saying stuff like we’re breaking down traditions. Indeed, the energy, for a significant period, was entirely positive.

3. The Growth Phase

Growth phase. Cohesion maintained by rote learning of the cult’s slogans. These beliefs can appear contradictory as a loyalty check.

Does anyone else feel? The reaction, the anger, the disappointment following the initial loss feels overblown, overdone. The batting collapsed on the field, as is typical there. They were savaged while bowling during a brief period when tactics failed, outplayed by the opponent playing aggressively but smarter, adjusting to the pitch, a performer excelling with aura.

Now there is the pile-on, the frustration, the view of the sport as a disgrace. The feeling seems to be that England don’t just need to lose, they need to lose righteously, to be cleansed, destroyed, overwhelmed through sheer skill of the pace attack, the simple basics of the bowler, seen enjoying successes humbly similar to getting a nice new fishing rod. What will this do to them?

4. The Backlash Phase

Problems arise due to setbacks. Yet, mistakes are denied. It starts to feed on anger towards critics.

In truth, half a week out from the second Test, we have now reached a critical juncture in the story of this approach. Victory is possible overseas with bold tactics. Probably, failure may follow. In case of defeat it feels like we could be witnessing the final stage.

Before that happens, there are two things to consider about this. More than two years ago, back in those heady early days, of optimism and energy, I wrote an article labeling it a movement. Criticism followed, which proved the point as it’s known how to confirm that it’s not a closed group is when its acolytes send hundreds of furiously one-eyed messages objecting to the questioning of the philosophy.

What has happened recently are fascinating. It seems that hating Bazball is now the trend. Social media is furious, critical analysts, shots of angry middle-aged supporters abroad cheated out of three days of cricket, similar to investors demanding recourse.

On the other hand, we have the wider backdrop of the host’s complex deep-seated frustration towards the unconventional visitors, claiming, your cherished traditions and have honed as part of your identity from others, it’s not serious ultimately.

And this is the real point. Everything is a cult. The approach was a phenomenon since the sport itself is insular. In fact, the sport in England is closed, a circle, a private event, an insular community with a long history of tradition and mystery defining it. Historically, this was a place where power and access are hoarded. It’s the imperial sport of England, the pioneering brand. And notably, Britain is itself a cult, a system of unknown levels, a royal family remains.

The team have been enclosed in this environment for years. In trying to escape from it, to foster positivity, they are mirroring their own experience, building another enclosure, a closed circle, however with 15 cool guys and a leader promoting authenticity provided you conform.

Stay present. Confront risks. Despite efforts, you’re always basically in the same place.
