Vince Gilligan Reveals He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... Currently.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
As the debut season of the acclaimed sci-fi show coming to an end—and Season 2 already in development—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.
About the Incredible Audience Reaction
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and fan theories about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to steer clear of all that.
“It feels like an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.
The Central Mystery: Does the creator See the Finale of Pluribus?
Considering the writers aren’t being guided by fan response, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? Essentially yes… in a way.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a solid concept for a better idea. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.
“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Then again, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
