UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror Merging Survival Horror with Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a young woman containing several personalities inside her must escape from a maze of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct souls, all possessing unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy medical facility, though other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a abandoned church.
An Environment of Individual Dread
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to other people can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are unique to every individual."
The central mechanic revolves around managing the persona that surfaces at any given time. However, these souls will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the protagonist in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have enormous blooms where their heads should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
After a player have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fake. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
