The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – However It Has Evolved Into a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.
A recent initialism emerged several months following the onset of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Known as WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is specific to Gaza, according to medical experts like paediatricians. Normally, it is unusual for physicians to attend to a child who has been bereaved of their entire family. Yet, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been obliterated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal about numerous doctors returning from a devastated terrain with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.
A Hell on Earth Despite a Announced Cessation of Hostilities
The Gaza Strip continues to be an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are not getting in those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that violations are continuing. Authorities has denied these accusations, consistent with how it refutes each claim it is charged with. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from advancing its professed goal of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, although several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, apparently, is what unity looks like.
Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be treated differently.
A Selective Vision
Overlook the circumstance that Israel was alleged to have used questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an bid to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have surged. Overlook the situation that foreign reporters are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, it would seem, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.
The Contest Continues Amidst Staggering Tragedy
Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of a person in Gaza now. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it once represented. An institution that initially championed peace has transformed into a cynical way to whitewash war.
