Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”
It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where his condition is described as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”
New York police issued video stills Monday of a man sought in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries according to reports.
The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday in the area between MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he attends every game. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He joined Arizona in last year and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
