People have come together throughout the country to mark two years since the Hamas-led assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions continued in Egypt over an end to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The assault resulted in in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the most most fatal day for Jewish people since the Second World War.

Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.

"Our bloodthirsty enemies have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister added on Tuesday.

He also promised to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel".

Commemorative Events Across Israel

The government authorities delayed formal commemorations until 16 October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still took place around the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas attack was held in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the families themselves, it was aired on Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was respected throughout the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

Meanwhile, both sides' negotiating teams convened in the North African tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to review the provisions of the agreement.

A high-ranking Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations indicated that an late session of mediated discussions began at 7 PM local time.

The representative said the morning session concluded without tangible results, due to conflicting views over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not restart fighting after the first phase of the deal.

He commented that the discussions are "tough and have yet to achieve any major advancement," but mentioned that intermediaries are striving to reduce the disparities between the both parties.

Key Points in Negotiations

  • An enduring truce
  • The swap of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for humanitarian aid distribution
  • After-conflict management of the region

Civilian Feeling

In Tel Aviv's memorial area previously, young a woman - whose brother survived the assault on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were killed and dozens more were captured by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No location seems like home now and until all the hostages are released none of us will be secure."

"When we see everyone home returned, we can breathe anew. Then we can begin to rebuild," she continued.

Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to show their backing for the relatives of the captives. Israel reports 48 continue in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be living.

Protester one woman stated: "We must do whatever arrangement required for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be safe."

Surveys now consistently show that about the majority of Israelis desire the war to end in as payment for the liberation of the hostages.

Palestinian Circumstances

At the area of the music event, grieving people came together to honor the dead.

From the site, the sound of aerial bombardments and artillery could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the severe Israeli bombardment persisted.

In Gaza City, bombardments were documented in the morning of that day in the western neighborhood, area and locality neighbourhoods and in the east side area of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.

"Once the night falls, the anxiety appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack previously, explained.

"Me and my three children are afraid of the air strikes. All the night we are lying together, clinging, especially my youngest child who puts his head on me throughout the night."

"Continuously we monitor the updates to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be achieved and that the fighting will return to us."

Medical Emergency

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City said it had accepted the corpses of half dozen people by the daytime, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the southern area.

Nasser hospital in the south region of Khan Younis indicated two more fatalities had been brought there. An individual was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while looking for assistance to the southern area, medics said.
