India's capital Wakes Up to Dangerous Haze Post Diwali

On Tuesday morning citizens of the world's most polluted city encountered breathing extremely polluted air that was classified as the "critical" category.

Extremely High Air Quality Readings

Various sections of Delhi registered an pollution measurement above 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the healthy threshold established by the global health authority.

In some locations, readings of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of 1,800, amounting to fifteen to twenty times higher than healthy standards.

Fireworks Prohibition and Current Developments

Beginning in 2020, officials had implemented a total prohibition on the sale and use of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the hazardous pollution that covers the capital as the cold season sets in.

Yet earlier this year, the current city administration appealed to the supreme court to seek a modification of the restrictions.

Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – which have been criticized by environmentalists as being only about 30% lower impact – as a balance between "tradition and public health".

Judicial Ruling and Enforcement

Despite concerns of medical and ecological advocates, the court agreed to the request, stipulating that green firecrackers could be ignited during specific hours throughout the Diwali.

On Monday night, there was widespread disregard of the time restrictions across the capital, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Numerous recording stations throughout the city recorded contamination peaking around late evening to extremely hazardous levels seen during Diwali in at least recent memory.

Cross-Border Consequences

Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during Diwali also initiated a dispute with neighbouring the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistani the Punjab region partially attributing deteriorating pollution levels in Lahore on pollutants coming from India following the festivities.

Chronic Environmental Crisis

Extremely elevated readings of air contamination in the capital have remained as a significant issue for more than 15 years, with the problem continuing to worsen.

Near Diwali, the levels of dangerous airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been found to shoot up to 70% higher the worst readings ever recorded in China's capital, which was previously viewed as the world's most polluted metropolis.

Multiple Pollution Sources

The situation in the city is attributed to a mix of different contributors including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, construction activities, waste incineration and smoke from farm burning in adjacent areas of neighboring agricultural zones.

In these regions, farmers regularly burn crop residue to clear them quickly, producing hazardous haze that remains stagnant over the capital as cooler air sets in.

Public Health and Economic Toll

Public health and economic consequences on the roughly thirty-three million people calling home the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to various investigations.

This pollution leads to elevated rates of nervous system, heart and circulatory and lung conditions, and can potentially cause malignancies.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be responsible for approximately 10k premature fatalities annually in the capital.
