Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment

Democratic officials voiced outrage after former President Donald Trump alleged a contingent of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and declared they should be detained and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their publication of a contentious video.

The Recording That Sparked the Debate

The recorded message, released on Tuesday, includes six Democratic elected officials who formerly worked in armed forces or defense roles.

"Similar to us, you all made an pledge to safeguard and defend this founding document," the representatives declared in the short video. "Currently, the threats to our democratic foundation aren't just from abroad, but from right here at home. Our regulations are clear, you can refuse illegal orders, you can decline unlawful commands, you should reject unlawful commands. No one has to execute commands that break the legal system or our founding principles."

Trump's Incensed Reaction

The clip appeared to prompt a angry reaction from the ex-president.

On the following morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another post, he wrote: "This is really concerning, and Harmful to our Country. Their comments cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a additional post, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Opposition Officials React

Following Trump's statements on Thursday, Democratic leadership released a combined declaration censuring the statements.

"Political violence has no role in this nation," they stated. "Elected officials who participated in the video all worked our nation with tremendous national pride and honor. We strongly condemn Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous death threats against members of Congress, and appeal to GOP representatives to strongly do the same."

The party representatives also said that they had been in contact with law enforcement "to make certain the protection of these representatives and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must without delay remove these radical digital publications and withdraw his aggressive language before he causes harm," the declaration stated.

Representatives' Strong Response

The officials who were featured in the video also issued a statement.

"We are veterans and security experts who love this nation and took an pledge to defend and support the national charter of the United States," they said. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we aim to honor it. No threat, coercion, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that sacred responsibility."

"The significant point is that the ex-president views it subject to penalty by death for us to restate the law," they continued. "Military personnel should know that we have their protection as they carry out their vow to the constitution and obligation to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."

They added: "The entire nation must come together and censure the president's demands for our death and ideological conflict. This is a period for ethical certainty."

More Partisan Responses

The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's remarks and posted on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the execution of elected officials."

He continued: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, all citizens – regardless of party – should condemn this right away and without qualification."

The Conservative official justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "It is very harmful, you have important representatives of Congress telling military personnel to disobey orders, I think that's unprecedented in American history."

The Conservative representative also reportedly told journalists that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the crime of sedition" but that "lawyers have to analyze the wording and decide all that."

Executive Branch Statement

During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when inquired by a journalist, "Is the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative responded: "Absolutely not."

"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is responding to," the representative declared. "You have active officials of the federal government who conspired to organize a video message to individuals of the US military, to serving soldiers advising them to defy the president's lawful orders."

She added: "The purity of our armed forces depends on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is broken, it can cause casualties, it can lead to chaos, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are fundamentally promoting."
